From the year 1990, as a result of its constitutional reforms for building a federation, Belgium embarked on regionalization approaches as regards foreign trade competences. Before this, the Belgian Office for Foreign Trade (OBCE) was the biggest institution in Belgium in charge of promoting its international trade. Afterwards, a Walloon agency (AWEX), as well as a Flemish one (FIT) and another from Brussels (Brussels Invest & Export) were created. At the international level, there is still the Belgian Foreign Trade Agency (BFTA), but this institution only assumes limited functions of national representation and coordination of regional actions.
